The U.S. men's basketball teams earned seven consecutive gold medals from 1936-1968 while India won six straight men's hockey golds from 1928-1956.
"What I would say it was a very hard game", U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski told reporters.
U.S. MEN'S BASKETBALL ADVANCES TO TITLE GAME: It wasn't a rout, but the United States men's basketball team pocked a win in the semifinals on Thursday, holding off Spain 82-76 as Klay Thompson popped in 22 points. All 11 Americans who played in the first half scored.
"This is where we wanted to be", Kevin Durant said.
"It's a Game 7", Jordan said of the gold medal contest. USA standout Allyson Felix captured her fifth career gold medal in the race.
While others handle the scoring, Jordan does the dirty work under the net and led the National Basketball Association in rebounds in 2014 and 2015.
It was the lowest-scoring game for the Americans in the Olympics since the 2004 semifinals, when they managed 81 in a loss to Argentina.
But despite a spirited effort from the London and Beijing finalists, who were never too far behind, the United States led the match from start to finish, as Klay Thompson led the way with 22 points.
The American women won their 49th consecutive Olympic game to close out gold in Rio.
Spain played the USA close.
The U.S. dominated Spain in the preliminary round, beating the Spaniards by 40 points.
Serbia was ready for the stage - it played its best game of the Olympics. "Their athleticism, their size, they made our offense get hard during most of the possessions".
The U.S. offense was never pretty on Friday. They did the same thing in London four years ago.
"We've got one game", said Team USA captain Carmelo Anthony. The American sprinters were rather displeased - Mike Rodgers used a word that we're not allowed to repeat here. They won by almost 40 points a game, but fell short of the record 102.4 points the 1996 team averaged. By the time the fourth quarter arrived - thanks to a 39-25 edge in that period - it was nothing but their latest laugher as they led 88-57. But Spain was able to keep the gap from getting any bigger and chipped away in the final minutes, the margin ending up smaller than in the previous matchups.
"To win gold we need to continue to make that effort on the defensive end, and if we play with passion like tonight, we will be tough to beat", Durant told reporters.
Only two other nations claim such a run of domination in an Olympic team sport.
