Twice grand slam victor Wawrinka ended the rousing comeback effort by the Argentinian at Flushing Meadows with a 7-6 (5) 4-6 6-3 6-2 win to close out Day 10 at the year's last grand slam.
A crowd favorite at Flushing Meadows since his five-set finals win over Roger Federer, del Potro charged to a 4-1 lead in the opening set before Wawrinka brought the set back on serve in the seventh game.
"Something hard to describe with words", del Potro, who is ranked 142 and given a wild card into the event, told reporters about the salute.
Wawrinka showed no mercy, breaking twice for a 4-0 lead, and while the crowd sang Del Potro's name at the finish, the Swiss confirmed victory at 1.15am local time after three hours and 13 minutes.
NEW YORK (AP) The last spots in the U.S. Open semifinals will be decided Wednesday, with Serena Williams, Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro seeking to keep their dominant runs going.
He then came up against Daniel Evans in a match that went to five sets, before again dropping a set against Illya Marchenko.
Juan Martin del Potro listened as the umpire pleaded in vain to quiet the crowd and wiped tears from his eyes as chants of "Ole, ole, ole, Delpo, Delpo!" reverberated across the stadium. "I mean, I can lose the match, but I will never forget this".
It was to be Wawrinka's night though, with the two-time grand slam champion booking a semi-final date with Kei Nishikori, who downed second seed Andy Murray earlier in the day.
Wawrinka started the fourth set with a break and held his nerve to record his 37th match win of the season (37-12 overall).
"I'm already top 100, so that's good", he added. Next week, he will rocket into the top 65 in the world.
The Wawrinka-Nishikori matchup is a rematch of their 2014 Open semifinal won by the Japanese star.
Andy Murray, of Britain, serves to Grigor Dimitrov, of Bulgaria, during the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Monday, Sept. 5, 2016, in NY. I got exhausted after the third set.
"I'm really happy to have won that match".
"I'm not on the same level as these guys".
"It was not easy because he's really tough, he makes you hesitate, I tried to make longer rallies and go back a bit to make him play more balls". I saw him play today. "He won here. He got so unlucky with all the injury he had, and the way he's playing right now already, it's unbelievable".
