Sens. McConnell, Schumer Elected to Senate Leadership

Washington Sen. Patty Murray will take over as assistant democratic leader, while Illinois Sen.

Outside of the leadership vote, Schumer told reporters that he's spoken to President-elect Donald Trump "a couple of times".

Schumer said that "when you lose an election like this you can't flinch". From left are, Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va., Sen. Ellison, D-Minn., is co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.is elected minority leader for the upcoming 115th Congress.

"I'm proud to have an opportunity to be a part of our leadership team as Senate Democrats and our country move forward", Baldwin said in a statement released via Twitter.

"For years, Senator Schumer has been out on the front lines fighting for Democrats". It ranged from liberals like Sens.

On the day after the election last week, Trump made a phone call to Schumer.

Schumer, Reid's hand-picked successor, thought he'd supplant Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, as the chamber's majority leader.

Schumer takes on the new post having just been reelected to a fourth term in the Senate. The 74-year-old has a genteel manner but has proven to be a coolly effective leader, steering his party through a long battle over a Supreme Court vacancy and the stormy - though ultimately successful - presidential candidacy of Trump.

The vote by the Senate Democratic caucus made Schumer, 65, the first Senate minority leader from NY in the nation's history, and perhaps the most influential Democrat in Washington at a time when his party will have no control over the White House or Congress.

He's pushed a conservative agenda while cutting budget deals with President Barack Obama.

As for the GOP, it re-elected Sen. He just needs to prove he can stop Trump in the Senate and then we will trust him to stop him again in the election.

When trump and Ted Cruz were sparring over NY values in the GOP primary, Schumer sided with trump.

Republican Senate aides said the party would not risk leadership election "drama" on the heels of a GOP sweep. Senate Democrats are turning to Schumer, a Brooklyn-bred partisan infighter with a pragmatic streak, to steer them into the Donald Trump era. Schumer has a history of being a savvy partisan combatant willing to strike compromises, such as on a 2013 bipartisan immigration overhaul that ended up dying. "My role in the future is to make certain that that agenda that has so much support becomes the agenda of the Democratic Party".

In the House, Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., is on track to keep his job after Republicans endorsed him Wednesday by voice vote.

Pelosi, who may face a challenger, agreed this week to delay leadership elections until November 30 after her fellow Democrats called for more time to reassess why they fell short of their goals in the November 8 election.

Also on Wednesday, Nancy Pelosi officially announced that she is seeking to be re-elected as House minority leader.
