BlackBerry Launches New Security Platform for Business

WATERLOO, Ontario-BlackBerry revealed its latest security offering on Thursday meant to help companies reliably manage their current and future connectivity needs.

"BlackBerry's new platform is created to be the foundation that drives the company's ongoing move to software, is cloud enabled and addresses the entire enterprise from endpoint to endpoint", the release said.

BlackBerry, once a leader in smart phone manufacturing, has recently abandoned hardware production to focus on its more profitable software business.

Since taking over three years ago, Chen has slowly dismantled the company's smartphone business while shoring up revenue by acquiring software companies whose only connection to each other seemed to be that they were in the security space.

The market for enterprise mobility management is expected to grow from $1.76 billion in 2016 to over $4.5 billion by 2020, representing a CAGR of about 27%, and the overall adressable market - including BlackBerry's various security products - could actually be much larger.

Considering the information security costs money, BlackBerry has ensured that its BlackBerry Secure platform doesn't financially burden enterprises by enabling IT administrators leverage their current investments, as well as provide them unified endpoint management (UEM) across all devices, apps, users, policies and operating systems, including Android for Work, Samsung KNOX, iOS, Windows 10, MacOS and BlackBerry 10), as well help replace expensive VDI (virtual desktop infrastructure) platforms.

The technologies that originally came under the BlackBerry umbrella through acquisitions of companies such as Good Technology, WatchDox, AtHoc, and Encription build the basis of BlackBerry Secure, the release said.

As part of BlackBerry's platform, which will be offered as a subscription-based product suite, the company also said it is launching a new portfolio of applications designed for the mobile work environment to be available in January.

BlackBerry Access (formerly Good Access) - Gives your organization the ability to confidently enable mobile access to a broad range of web apps and intranet resources containing sensitive information.

The announcement comes weeks before BlackBerry is scheduled to report its fiscal 2017 third quarter results. The Company trades under the ticker symbols "BB" on the Toronto Stock Exchange and "BBRY" on the NASDAQ. Below, we take a look at the new offering and how BlackBerry could stand to benefit.
