The New York Jets signed quarterback Josh McCown to a one-year, $6 million contract on Monday. Backup Geno Smith, however, signed with the New York Giants on Monday while third-year quarterback Bryce Petty struggled in four starts in 2016, throwing seven interceptions before a torn labrum ended his season.
The Jets have signed veteran QB Josh McCown.
NFL Network first reported McCown's visit with NY. Not only is McCown approaching 38 years of age in July, but other - and younger - quarterbacks were still on the market. During that campaign, McCown threw for 1,829 yards with 13 TDs and 1 INT while posting a career-best 109.0 passer rating.
The Jets finally have found a veteran quarterback, and perhaps their starter for 2017. The contract is fully guaranteed, so the Jets seem to be serious about this.
"I think they might already have their quarterback", the source said.
The Jets signing McCown is meaningful in the game of free-agent quarterback musical chairs.
The rumors were strongly in McCown's favor after a previous visit and Daniel's visit was a bit of a surprise.
The well-traveled McCown has also spent time with Detroit, Oakland, Miami, Carolina, San Francisco, Chicago and Tampa Bay.
Still, it does not hurt to give McCown a one-year deal. He is 18-42 in 60 National Football League starts.
But his transition to the Jets should be much smoother given his existing relationship with new quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates, who previously was an assistant in Chicago when McCown was Cutler's backup.
