"But this year we may not even see a point where gas prices get up to a 35-cent increase because utilization is already looking good and most refinery maintenance has peaked, so that is good news for motorists".
In the greater High Point area, the average price for a gallon of self-service unleaded is $2.31, though some city stations still were selling gas for several cents cheaper on Thursday.
The national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.40 which is three cents more than last week and 32 cents more per gallon than previous year.
The switch to more environmentally friendly, warm-weather fuel blends and increased demand by motorists are driving up gasoline prices, AAA Carolinas reports.
Tucson has Arizona's lowest average gasoline price at $2.16 a gallon with Flagstaff the highest at $2.46.
North Carolina's average price of gas is $2.30, 40 cents higher than the average a year ago.

Gasoline prices reflect four main components: crude oil prices, wholesale margins, retail distribution costs, and taxes. However, this price is still almost 70 cents per gallon below the previous five-year average, STEO found. During the spring and summer, gas demand often increases and gas specifications change from winter-grade to spring- and summer-grade.
From coast to coast, changes in gas prices will be significant, according to STEO. Asheville is paying the highest average price in the state at $2.33, while Wilmington is seeing the lowest average price at $2.25.
On the other side of the country, gas prices in the Gulf Coast are often among the lowest in the country because of relatively low state tax rates and abundant gas supplies, as the region is home to about half of US petroleum refining capacity.
