Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017, and Episode IX is due in 2019.
The first trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi has dropped, showcasing a Luke Skywalker who just might be flirting with the dark side.
After months of speculation to whether the star would be would appearing in the upcoming flick, while speaking with The New York Daily News Todd said that the family had given Disney execs their blessing. Johnson said her character embodies the notion that even the most unlikely person can step up and become a hero. We have not read a script yet'.
Update, 3:26 p.m. PT: Adds details from Lucasfilm President Kathy Kennedy's interview with ABC News. At one point Kennedy said Fisher's performance in the film is "remarkable".

Unfortunately, in Hollywood, that often means killing the character, though they could continue Leia's story off-screen.

A film and Star Wars icon, Fisher famously portrayed Princess Leia in the franchise, starting with Star Wars: A New Hope in May 1977.
Meanwhile, director Rian Johnson previously teased that Star Wars: Episode VIII - now known as The Last Jedi - would focus on Rey learning and beginning to understand her connection to The Force.
