The teacher suspected of kidnapping a 15-year-old student and taking her across the country will be arraigned in federal court in Sacramento. Thomas and the man who allegedly kidnapped her, Tad Cummins, were found in a remote part of northern California after a man became suspicious of their behavior and tipped off police.
The Maury County Public Schools Facebook post comes in the wake of complaints from the girl's family that the school system did not respond properly after a student at the Culleoka Unit School reported seeing teacher Tad Cummins kissing the 15-year-old student.
The lawyer for Elizabeth Thomas says the Tennessee teen is "comfortable and resting" in a safe location with family and friends after returning today from her alleged abduction, according to a statement obtained by PEOPLE. He was expected to be arraigned in California on Friday, but the Siskiyou County Sheriff's Department said he was taken into Federal Bureau of Investigation custody and will likely be brought back to Tennessee.
The federal charges are in addition to other charges being filed against Cummins by the states of Tennessee and California.
Elizabeth Thomas, the teen at the center of an Amber Alert that drew nationwide attention, is back home in Tennessee.
[21.] "Further investigation also revealed that Cummins, while in Guymon, Oklahoma, traveled to another local Walmart with VICTIM on March 16, 2017, and purchased several items, including women's razors, chocolate, cheese cubes, and KY Jelly, a commonly used lubricant for sexual intercourse".
They disappeared a few weeks after a student reported seeing Cummins and Elizabeth kissing in a classroom.
DeVine said he did not know if Cummins was talking with investigators in California. He faces charges of aggravated kidnapping and sexual contact with a minor, said Lawrence County Attorney General Brent Cooper.
Police say Elizabeth is unharmed but has yet to make contact with her family as she is now in "too remote" of a location.
The caller said Cummins had taken up residence in Cecilville, about two hours from the nearest police station. A Tennessee Bureau of Investigation plane landed in Nashville around 2:00 p.m. Friday afternoon. While Anthony Thomas says he hasn't had a chance to speak to his daughter yet-he hopes to soon-he says she is going to need therapy to recover from the ordeal. The search for the pair spawned Amber alerts in Tennessee and Alabama, a sighting in Oklahoma City and more than 1,500 tips before they were found this week in Siskiyou County, which borders Oregon. "She didn't act like a rescued person would act", showing no signs of elation, he said.
March 13 - Cummins leaves a note to his wife that he is travelling to Virginia Beach, Va. or the Washington, D.C. area to clear his head. "I guess I'm glad that they came out here and I got to help". The teenager left her home March 13 to go to a nearby restaurant where authorities believe she was taken by Cummins.
