Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes threw a pitch that went behind Orioles slugger Manny Machado's head Sunday.
On Friday night at Camden Yards, Machado made a late slide that injured Boston second baseman Dustin Pedroia.
Barnes is appealing the suspension and can play until his hearing is held. He will be able to pitch during the process.
Matt Barnes was suspended four games on Monday.
If baseball is serious about curbing or eliminating this ever-dangerous practice of frontier justice, Joe Torre should have taken a stronger stance and issued a punishment of at least 10 games.
From the Boston dugout in Baltimore, Pedroia could be seen telling Machaco "That's not me" after the Orioles third baseman was almost plunked by Barnes, and called it a "mishandled situation" following Boston's win.
"In my head, I didn't do anything wrong, so we'll see what happens", Sano said through a translator before the Twins' game at Texas on Monday night.
"I would never intentionally throw at someone's head", Barnes explained, per ESPN.com. "If you're going to protect guys, you do it right away". Barnes was ejected, and video appeared to show Pedrioa telling Machado that the intented retribution by his teammate was "bull****". Pedroia missed the final two games of the series with knee and ankle injuries. I'm sorry to him and his team.
