Sexual Assault Awareness Month - Denim Day

The community-wide event will take place on April 26. Although the colors are vibrant and cheerful, the bold text conveys a serious message: Denim Day seeks to bring conversation to sexual assault, in which participants wear denim to showcase their support for assault victims. NOMC president and USC Denim Day coordinator Ellie McDaniel recognizes the struggle the University faces in an attempt to better address sexual assault statistics. Members of the Italian Parliament, including Alessandra Mussolini, granddaughter of Benito Mussolini, displayed their outrage by wearing jeans and protesting inside Parliament.
Locally, The Women's Center provides prevention, crisis intervention, and support services with regard to domestic violence, sexual assault, and other major life transitions.
"I was shocked when I first read those statistics", Kearns said of the 2007 report.
The report said that during their lifetimes, 83 per cent of women and 40 per cent of men with intellectual disabilities are sexually abused.
Buttons will be passed out at the Denim Day table that say "ask me why I'm wearing denim" to raise awareness. Justices determined she must have helped her rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent.

Denim Day Milwaukee is part of an worldwide awareness day that began after an Italian woman was raped by her driving instructor.
