A former spokesperson to immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan, Doyin Okupe, has said that if President Muhammdu Buhari must resign, due to his ill health, the interest of his political associates who worked tirelessly to bring him into office must be accommodated.
Presidency spokesman Femi Adesina said the 74-year-old's doctors would determine how long he stayed in the British capital, where he spent almost two months undergoing treatment from mid-January. "Government will continue to function normally under the able leadership of the Vice-President (Yemi Osinbajo)", Adesina said.
"PMB travels tonight for medical follow-up", presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said in a statement.
Adesina, however, insisted that there was "no cause for worry".
When he returned to the country on March 10, Buhari told Nigerians that he would make a follow-up trip in some weeks. He also hinted at the possibility of him going back for more treatment and acknowledged that he was terribly sick but did not disclose the true nature of his ailment. He also confessed to receiving "blood transfusions" and "going to the laboratories and so on and so forth".
President Buhari earlier met briefly with 82 Chibok girls in a controlled environment at the Aso Rock Villa where only govt-run media houses were allowed to cover the event. Five Boko Haram commanders were released in exchange for the freedom of 82 Chibok schoolgirls kidnapped by the extremist group three years ago, a Nigerian government official said Sunday, as the girls were expected to meet with the country's president and their families.
"Asking Buhari to resign may be the ideal but it is neither simple nor straight forward, in a country as complex and convoluted politically as Nigeria".
He said this in a piece titled "Buhari's Health: Matters Arising" which he shared on his Facebook page on Friday.
She wrote in a twitter post on Tuesday that "He continues to carry out his responsibilities during this period", although she did not state exactly when may be wrong with the President.
