A pregnant 10-year-old girl in northern India will be allowed to have a late-term abortion, a local court announced Tuesday.
A panel of doctors made a decision to abort the foetus of the 10-year-old girl, who was found to be 5 months pregnant after allegedly being raped repeatedly by her stepfather.
The child has said she was repeatedly raped by her stepfather, who has since been arrested.
The district court will take a call on the matter on Tuesday, the police said.
In recent months India's top court has received a number of petitions from women - including rape survivors and trafficking victims - seeking abortions where pregnancies had gone beyond 20 weeks.
India's Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act doesn't allow abortion after 20 weeks unless "the termination of such pregnancy is immediately necessary to save the life of the pregnant woman".
The Indian Express said the victim's mother wanted the accused to be set free as he had apologised and that she had other children to take care of.
NEW DELHI (AP) - One woman was brutally gang raped and murdered, her body left disfigured in a patch of shrubs near her home in a north Indian village.
A case has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and the Arms Act and further investigation into the case is on, police said.
"The victim is 10 years old but may be one or two years older", Pankaj Nain, superintendent of Rohtak police, told CNN.
In a particularly brutal case, a postmortem examination found the woman had been raped with sharp objects. The woman's head was smashed with a brick and a vehicle run over her before the body was dumped.

The police have appealed the girl to come forward as they could not locate her at the address mentioned in the letter.
