Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was expected to be very big in theaters this weekend, but it even took home a bit more than what most industry forecasters had assumed, signaling a strong box office and (obviously) a pretty well-received film!
This image released by Disney-Marvel shows Zoe Saldana, from left, Karen Gillan, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Rocket, voiced by Bradley Cooper, in a scene from, "Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2". In two weeks of global release, the film has also made $269 million overseas.
Lionsgate's "How to be a Latin Lover" placed fourth with an estimated 5.25 million in its second weekend.
"Vol. 2" accounted for about 85% of Friday's total box office with $56.3 million (including Thursday's previews).
It'll be a long time till we get Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, but now we can just enjoy Vol. 2 which is out in theaters now.
"This weekend the movie earned an estimated $124 million overseas after opening in several more major foreign markets including Korea, Russia and China", wrote Variety News Editor Seth Kelley.
The Beauty and the Beast remake pushed its way back into the top five this weekend.
The Disney/Marvel comedy about a band of misfit space adventurers - a sequel to Marvel's 2014 smash-hit film - accounted for almost 80 per cent of the money hauled in by the 12 top-selling movies over the three-day weekend, according to industry analyst Exhibitor Relations.
Oh, so we're saving the summer box office a second time?
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. That sets a new mark for an Indian film at the worldwide box office. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. "[These] big numbers represent quite a transition for Gunn", wrote Seth Kelley, "who, before signing on to direct the first Guardians, was mostly known as a B-movie director".
"The Fate of the Furious", $30.1 million.
"Beauty and the Beast", $11.9 million.
