Senate Intelligence Committee invites Comey to testify publicly

The House Oversight Committee on Tuesday evening requested a copy of recently FBI Director Comey's memorandum on the Flynn investigation following The New York Times report stating that Comey documented in a memorandum the contents of a February meeting with President Donald Trump in which the president told Comey that he hoped the Bureau would not pursue the Flynn investigation.

The top Republican and Democrat on the House oversight committee are applauding the choice of former FBI Director Robert Mueller as a special counsel to lead the Justice Department's investigation into allegations of collusion between associates of President Donald Trump and Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election.

"We are writing to request that the Oversight Committee and the Judiciary Committee launch an immediate joint investigation into whether President Donald Trump and his top officials are engaged in an ongoing conspiracy to obstruct the criminal, counter-intelligence, and oversight investigations now being conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Justice, and Congress into members of his presidential campaign and their contacts with Russian officials", they stated.

Speaking with reporters on Capitol Hill, the committee's ranking member, Democratic Sen. Trump also reportedly described Flynn as a "good guy".

Flynn was forced to resign one day before the conversation between Comey and Trump, after it was revealed that Flynn lied to Vice President Mike Pence about connections he had with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

"It's just not common that you go out and fire an FBI Director", he said. Dianne Feinstein wrote Comey on Wednesday.

The White House has denied that Trump attempted to influence the investigation.

Both the House and Select Senate Intelligence Committees are investigating Russian attempts to manipulate the outcome of the 2016 USA presidential election as well as allegations of collusion between members of the Trump campaign and high-ranking Russian officials.

Comey had testified exactly 10 years ago in the Senate about his famous hospital-room showdown with former U.S. President George W. Bush's White House aides at John Ashcroft's bedside, CNN reported.

Chaffetz rose to national prominence as a public face of GOP efforts to probe Clinton's activities in advance of the 2016 election.

Chaffetz has also asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation for all information on Comey's memos.
