"These are just a few of the many heroes we honor today", said Sterling, of the Lake Havasu City Police Department, during remarks at Wednesday morning's Peace Officers Memorial service outside the Bullhead City Police Department.
The Public Safety Officers' Benefits Act of 2017 was passed unanimously by the Senate Monday. The service is taking part at 11025 Voyager Parkway in Colorado Springs. "During National Law Enforcement Week, please take the time to say thank you to the fearless men and women working hard across this nation, each and every day, to bring safety and security to your communities". Friends, family members, and fellow officers gathered outside of Springfield police headquarters for speeches and the presenting of a wreath at the officers memorial. "I also ask everyone to remember the officers who have made the ultimate sacrifice for the community they serve".
"The Bill of Rights; which I believe in deeply, and I know you do too, is nothing more than words on a piece of paper without the rule of law", says Hawley. The exception was in 2001, when 243 died - 72 of whom were killed in the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the most in any single incident in USA history. Dorner targeted law enforcement officers in what the Police Foundation described as a weird act of vengeance - a "gang-style hit" on innocent people sitting in a auto. Bowling, who served as both a Martinsville police officer and Marine Corps reservist, was killed January 26, 2005 when his unit's convoy was ambushed in Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
A NATIONAL campaign calling for a UK Police Memorial has received local backing.
"It is entirely fitting that those officers and staff who give their lives in the line of duty should be remembered with a lasting tribute".
In 2016, for the first time in the 36-year history of the event, neither the President of the United States, nor the Vice President bothered to show up to speak for and comfort those who mourned.
The annual ceremony held on Wednesday afternoon commemorated those 64 officers, a list that grew by two - Fargo Police Officer Jason Moszer and Rollette County Sheriff's Deputy Colt Allery - since 2016.
Since 1749 and the creation of the Bow Street Runners over 4,000 men and women have given their lives to serve and protect our communities in the UK. Like many of you, I understand and respect the great sacrifices our fearless, devoted officers make every day protecting us from danger.
"Our weekend will be highlighting the sacrifices these men made not only for NY, but the entire nation", he said.
The project will also include a digital memorial that will be accessible all over the world, an educational programme for use by schools and colleges and a "living memorial fund" which will support the families of those killed on duty in the future.
