Iowa Governor Branstad confirmed as US Ambassador to China

The U.S. Senate confirmed Gov. Terry Branstad Monday as the new U.S. Ambassador to China.

USA senators voted 82-13 to approve President Donald Trump's nomination of the Republican governor to the serve as America's representative in one of the world's most powerful nations.

In addition to celebrating her ascension to the governor's office after more than six years as lieutenant governor, the inaugural celebration fundraiser will signal the state GOP's support for Reynolds, Chairman Jeff Kaufmann said Monday. In 1985, when Branstad was a first-term governor, a young Xi visited Iowa leading a government agricultural research delegation.

"I want to thank President Trump and Vice President Pence for nominating me to be the United States Ambassador to the People's Republic of China".

Iowa Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey called Branstad's departure "bitter sweet" but said the council was excited for the governor's new opportunity and the prospects for expanding trade in a key region.

"Both products make a lot of sense for China", Branstad told Successful Farming.

For years, USA farmers have complained that China cancels previously purchased US soybean orders without any penalty.

Branstad says he intends to use his decades-long relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping to advance USA and global interests.

Branstad said he was saddened to hear about Corning's death.

Branstad will resign as governor Wednesday, and go through a three-week orientation in Washington before moving to China early this summer.

Corning served two terms as lieutenant governor under Branstad beginning in 1990. We have long known and benefited from the relationship Governor Branstad has with the people of China.

"He will bring Midwestern humility and level-headed leadership to the job", Grassley said. He is a work horse who is unafraid to get in the trenches to get the job done. Family was always very important to Joy and I appreciated the example she set in having a professional career, while always putting her family first.

Governor Branstad is uniquely qualified to help strengthen the trade, economic, cultural and geo-political relationship between our two countries.
