Governor Branstad's chief of staff Michael Bousselot announced his resignation. It has been an honor to serve the people of Iowa alongside Terry Branstad and Kim Reynolds, and I look forward to continuing to work with both of these outstanding leaders in their new roles. He'll then be sworn in immediately as ambassador.
She's served as lieutenant governor alongside Branstad for the last several years.
The US Senate voted overwhelmingly to confirm Iowa Governor Terry Branstad as ambassador to China on Monday, giving the man who is a friend of presidents of both countries a position to "positively influence the US-China relationship".
Reynolds got her start in politics as treasurer for Clarke County, a largely rural county in southern Iowa with a population of less than 10,000.
"It's not any easy thing to leave the job that you love and that you've worked hard for and gone through many elections to achieve", he said.
With Branstad resigning, top aide leaving state government
Gov. Branstad said this position doesn't mean he will be leaving Iowa for good. "You continue to make us proud".
The secretary of state posted a photo on social media of his interaction with Reynolds, officially letting her know the job was open. She also stressed expanding workforce training for adults and providing more science, technology, engineering and math education in public schools. Reynolds will hold the office through 2018, when she is expected to run for a full term.
Branstad signed a range of conservative-leaning legislation this year amid new Republican control of the statehouse.
Reynolds will not reveal her decision about choosing a lieutenant governor until Thursday, after Wednesday's ceremonies are over. She adds she's ready to hit the ground running when she becomes the next governor of Iowa. Now she hopes to be a role mode and challenge herself to be known as more than Iowa's first woman in the office. "If the past seven years are any indication, Iowans aren't going to see this leadership from Governor Reynolds".
Hogg criticized former Branstad for only working with Republican leaders and said Reynolds' administration could be a chance to work together.
