Edinson Volquez throws no-hitter as Marlins down Diamondbacks

Pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso came up, and after falling behind 2-0 lead in the count, Volquez stopped for a moment, composed himself with a deep breath, and eventually got the strikeout on a 2-2 fastball.

Volquez needed just 98 pitches to complete his masterpiece, which is the first in major league baseball this season. Miami has won five of its past six games. Performance hasn't been much of an issue for the Dodgers lately - according to FanGraphs, they now rank first among all major league bullpens with a collective 4.2 fWAR and sit just behind the Indians with a 2.54 ERA. This is his first career no-no.

In Baltimore, Wade Miley allowed one run in seven innings, Mark Trumbo hit the first of Baltimore's four home runs off Eduardo Rodriguez and the Orioles beat Boston.

Hector Rondon (1-1) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win.

But Greinke, who is 5-0 with a 2.49 ERA in seven home starts, is 1-3 with a 4.62 ERA in four road outings. He exited after issuing a walk following Schwarber's ninth home run.

It was the Marlins' first no-hitter since Henderson Alvarez pitched one against Detroit on the final day of the 2013 regular season.

The four home runs in the eighth - all against Jason Grilli - were the most ever allowed in one inning by a Blue Jays reliever.

"Great mentor, great leader on the team", Realmuto said, as three workers on the field dug up the rubber for Volquez. The Blue Jays were held to three hits and five walks. The last Kansas City player with a longer streak was Alex Gordon (19 games in 2011). Chris Iannetta also homered and David Peralta scored twice for the Diamondbacks, whose three-game win streak was snapped. His 384-foot drive was his third homer of the season - all three have been hit at Petco Park - and third grand slam of his career.

Paul Goldschmidt homered and drove in three runs for Arizona.

The Marlins, though, could have a significant advantage on Thursday because the Diamondbacks were traveling Wednesday night from Pittsburgh, where Arizona won 6-5 in 14 innings.

Kluber (4-2) had been sidelined with a strained lower back, an injury that kept Cleveland's ace sidelined for a month.

Nick Ahmed - who broke up a no-hit bid by Milwaukee's Chase Anderson in the eighth inning one week earlier - led off the ninth for Arizona and struck out on four pitches. He cleaned up and got out of the sixth and then pitched a clean seventh.

Shipley (0-1, 6.75) makes his second start of the season for Arizona, against Miami's Vance Worley (0-2, 4.50) in the series finale. T.J. McFarland would come in, who's 0.81 ERA and.180 OBA quite frankly shocked me. Eight groundouts were a big reason for success.

Greinke was 1 for 25 this year before he singled in the sixth. Back-to-back singles from Maikel Franco and Andrew Knapp put runners on the corners with no outs and ended the day of Giants starter Johnny Cueto (5-5).

After crossing the plate, Stanton had his 579th career RBI, passing Mike Lowell (578) for the most in team history.
