The Scalise family also said they greatly appreciate the outpouring of thoughts and prayers for the wounded congressman.
U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise underwent an additional surgery on Saturday and his condition was upgraded to "serious", three days after he was shot in the hip when a gunman opened fire at a Republican congressional baseball practice, hospital officials said.
The list contained about a dozen names, a source said.
Sava says infection remains a risk, after doctors performed several surgeries to stop bleeding and begin repairing abdominal and bone damage.
Once recovered, Scalise will be able to walk and hopefully run, the doctor said. "Earlier today, Congressman Steve Scalise underwent a second surgery related to his internal injuries and a broken bone in his leg", the statement read. He has been sedated, but has been brought out of sedation periodically and been able to recognize and communicate with his family, Sava said.
The game raised more than a $1 million for charity Thursday night.
"His risk of death right now is substantially lower than when he came in". Congressional aide Zack Barth, Tysons Food lobbyist Matt Mika and Capitol Police Officer David Bailey were also shot in the attack, but have since been released from the hospital.
Police and Federal Bureau of Investigation officials declined to confirm media accounts that the list of names Hodgkinson carried was a "kill list"; they said the names were listed without any other comment.
The FBI said that the shooter's weapons found at the scene - a 9mm handgun and 7.62mm calibre rifle - had been legally purchased.
Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration.
Bailey received a hero's welcome from a record crowd of almost 25,000 at Thursday's game when he threw out the first pitch.
When Dr. Sava explained the extent of Scalise's injuries, however, the full nature of what the congressman suffered became apparent.
