Celtics trade No. 1 overall draft pick to 76ers

On Monday, June 19, the Boston Celtics finalized their trade that will send the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Associated PressHistory will say the Boston Celtics passed on the No. 1 overall pick in this year's National Basketball Association draft, not only trading it away but doing so in a deal with one of the team's fiercest rivals.

On top of its No. 3 overall pick, Philadelphia is also sending the 2018 first-round?pick it owns via the Los Angeles Lakers, which the Sixers acquired from Phoenix at the 2015 trade deadline. They selected Ben Simmons past year, but he missed all of the 2016-17 season with a broken foot. Then in 2013, he shipped Garnett, Pierce and Jason Terry for multiple future draft picks from there Brooklyn Nets, including the No. 1 pick that Boston won in the lottery this year. Philly and Boston thought of it as a win-win situation, with both believing there's "little difference" in the level of talent between the first and third picks.

George has spoken in the past about a preference to play for his hometown Los Angeles Lakers, and it would be risky for the Cavaliers to acquire him without a promise he would sign beyond the 2018 season.

The trade has been in place in principle since Saturday, but reports suggested that the Celtics might also receive a 2021 first-round pick in the deal, so perhaps that was the main point of negotiations.

"We think there's a really good chance the player we take at 3 is the player we would have taken at 1."
They're big on defense so I think the tools that I have to be a defensive player I think would help them get out in transition.

So much so that he cracked a joke at the expense of Celtics president Danny Ainge. "Two teams have two different agendas and you try to get to a common ground and where both sides feel comfortable moving forward and making a deal".

Colangelo on the brisk pace of ticket sales: "I would venture to say we're going to be sold out this year, playing to full capacity every night". Specifically, the Dubs could use their Bird rights on Iguodala for a more affordable deal than what he might obtain on the open market. Chris Mannix of CSNNE and The Vertical joined Toucher & Rich on Tuesday morning to discuss the trade, and isn't a very big fan of Ainge's bold move.

With Thomas, the Celtics didnt necessarily need a point guard — which is the piece Philadelphia apparently wanted most. Philadelphia was in a position to select an impact player at three while keeping its future picks to continue building.

The 6-foot-4 Fultz, who has a wingspan of 6-9¾, averaged 23.2 points, 5.9 assists, 5.7 rebounds and shot 41.3 percent from 3-point land during his only collegiate season. He was the top freshman scorer in the country.

The 2017 NBA Draft is this Thursday and we've already seen plenty of fireworks. “This pick provides us a tremendous opportunity to add another foundational player to our promising core.”.
