Darjelling unrest: GJM protest to continue; Rajnath appeals for calm

Dozens gathered at Bengaluru's Town Hall to protests against the "discriminatory" actions of West Bengal government and forceful imposition of Bengali language on the people of the hill. I believe the chief minister was a bit too aggressive. GJM General Secretary Roshan Giri said they were united on one point agenda - statehood for Nepali-speaking Indian Gorkhas in North Bengal.

He alleged that Banerjee was filing FIRs against the entire population of Darjeeling and whoever said that "I am Gorkha and I am fighting for my identity".

Rajnath took to Twitter and informed that Mamata had apprised her of the situation prevailing in Darjeeling. The GJM agitators had yesterday blocked the highway at some places in to protest the death of three their activists on Saturday.

Besides, an all-India panel comprising noted intellecutuals and politicians, would be formed to mobilise opinion regarding a separate state, he said.

"We have asked travel operators and hotels to try and accommodate as many tourists as they can without compromising on the service standards as any mismanagement at this time could give a bad name to the tourism industry", Zangpo said.

Internet services remained suspended for the second day Monday.

Lambasting the West Bengal Chief Minister for not taking cognizance of the incident, he said, "Mamata Banerjee has not even expressed condolence over the incident or help the deceased family". That Gorkha community which is protecting the country at the border with their own lives is being termed as terrorists'.

As the next major step, a core group has been formed to meet Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Wednesday.

The GJM ruled out any discussion with the government, but said it would be "comfortable" holding talks with the BJP-led government at the Centre. He reacted by saying "GJM would further strengthen their agitation".

'They are protesting for their issues. "If election were held today, we will sweep all the 45 seats", Tamang said.

'The MP should have been here... He should have been here in this hour of crisis.

"The role of alliance partner BJP is very unfortunate and very disappointing". Sources said that the GJM was making efforts to meet Union minister of state for home affairs Kiren Rijiju, who is now in Sikkim.

Opposing the Morcha's violent activities, the Adibasi Vikash Parishad has called for peace procession in Darjeeling.

According to sources in the home ministry, the West Bengal government's report, received by it on 17 June, stated these reasons among others as factors responsible for the violence in Darjeeling.

The State government had demanded two companies, 250 personnel of women paramilitary personnel.
