Let the Va. shooting spur recommitment to civility

The annual game is a tradition that pits Democrats and Republicans against each other on the same field where the Washington Nationals play, but this year it was more about unity than division.

Congressman Steve Scalise remains in critical condition following surgery to fix injuries sustained after he was shot at a congressional baseball practice Wednesday, hospital officials announced in a statement on Thursday evening.

The question is how long the spirit of unity will last on Capitol Hill, where bitter partisanship has been increasing with each new Congress.

"We've got to carry this on just, you know, beyond today", Hurd said about the bipartisanship that has come up since the shooting. The hospital planned to hold a briefing on his condition later in the day Friday.

House Speaker Paul Ryan has paid a visit to wounded Majority Whip Steve Scalise at the hospital.

After the recent shooting where James T. Hodgkinson opened fire at a GOP Congressional baseball practice (raw video below, ) Rep. Chris Collins, a Republican from Buffalo, New York, has already said he will be carrying a firearm with him whenever he's out in public from now on. Many players, although wearing uniforms of various professional and college baseball teams within their states and districts, wore the purple caps of Louisiana State University in Scalise's honor. Scalise is a member of the team and had been fielding balls at second base in preparation for the game when he was shot.

After accepting it gracefully, Mr Barton cracked: "Next year we won't be so nice".

The Louisiana lawmaker, who is the No. 3 Republican in the House, remains in critical condition at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. "The congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time". "The bullet traveled across his pelvis, fracturing bones, injuring internal organs, and causing severe bleeding", according to a statement Scalise's office released by MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He sustained a relatively minor injury Wednesday morning as he and other officers engaged with a gunman who shot up a practice of the GOP baseball team.

Captain Howard said Virginia Capitol Police did not increase security after Wednesday's shooting, but they did monitor the situation closely.

It emerged Hodgkinson had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector, had been living out of his van near the park. Authorities are investigating the incident but have not identified a motive. Also shot were a congressional aide, a lobbyist and a Capitol Police officer.

Most importantly, we are forever grateful for the heroism of Special Agents Crystal Griner and David Bailey, who saved the lives of everyone at the baseball field that morning, including Steve's.

"I think the security for members of Congress is embarrassingly inadequate".
