She will play the unseeded Ashleigh Barty in the final today, after the 21-year-old Australian upset sixth seed Garbine Muguruza, the former French Open champion, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the other semi-final yesterday.

Yet to drop a set in the event so far, the 18-time Grand Slam victor will be looking for his fourth title of the year and ninth Halle title before hoping to achieve his main goal of winning Wimbledon.

He will next face Karen Khachanov, who defeated Andrey Rublev 7-6 (8), 4-6, 6-3.

The Swiss will head to England this week as one of the favourites, along with French Open victor Rafael Nadal and defending champion Sir Andy Murray, although the Briton's recent form is patchy.

Twenty-year-old German Alexander Zverev defeated Richard Gasquet at the Halle Open in Germany on Saturday.

But he struggled to impose himself against Federer, who dropped just nine points on his serve.

Federer, an eight-time champion in Halle, had 11 aces, saved both break points he faced and converted two of his own to maintain his bid for a 16th grass-court title. "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the tie-breaker. t was perhaps not always very handsome to watch, but it's good to be in the final in the second tournament after my return", said the Swiss Master, via Fox Sports. "For the others, I think Andy (Murray) was just extremely exhausted after getting to World number 1 at the end of previous year". "I'm still just very happy how I was able to close it out in the tiebreaker", said Federer, who first reached the Halle final in 2003, when his opponent on Sunday was just 6".

Federer kept world number 12 Zverev on his toes and earned a second break point with some deft volleying, which he pounced on to race through the first set in 24 minutes.

"I played against a right-hander from the baseline in Sugita, a left-hander who serves and volleys all time (Zverev) and Mayer plays very differently to everyone else".

"It has been a hard year with a lot of practice, training and rehab so I am very happy to be back on the court", he said. I know he wants it badly, so it will be a tough one.
