Acrobat plummets to death before Green Day performance in Madrid

The man was tragically pronounced dead at the scene but whether it was promoters, organisers or Green Day themselves, the American rcok group took to the stage just 30 minutes after the man died.

The performer, Pedro Aunión Monroy, fell to the ground in front of about 35,000 frightened festivalgoers. Another replied to the band's tweet with "Not Mad Cool for you to just keep playing".

Due to the tragic event at Mad Cool this evening we felt it was not appropriate to play.

Monroy was a director of a performing arts company in Brighton called In Fact. "We are torn apart".

Both Mad Cool and Green Day were accused of insensitivity for resuming the festival so soon after the acrobat's fall.

He wrote: "I can't wait to see my attractive boyfriend. A very courageous artist named Pedro lost his life tonight in a tragic accident", Green Day tweeted afterwards. The band followed it up, adding, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends". Kings of Leon, Wilco, M.I.A. and Foster The People are among the artists scheduled to perform.

Billie Joe Armstrong, lead singer and guitarist of the band Green Day, performs during Madrid's Mad Cool Festival.

"Mad Cool Festival regrets the bad accident that the aerial dancer suffered during the second day of the festival", a spokesman said.

Speaking to the BBC, the hotel's general manager Andrew Mosley said: "We are all very sad to hear the news, it is the most awful news and our hearts go out to his friends and family".

"We send our most honest condolences to his family", the statement continued. Organizers went on to say a heartfelt tribute will be paid to the artist at Saturday night's concert.
