Truck Bomb Strikes Lahore

The counter terrorism department on Tuesday began probe into the truck bomb blast that left two people dead at a parking stand on the Outfall Road.

Official sources told PTI that the explosives were placed in the truck laden with fruits on the Out Fall Road - the route Sharif is to take on his return to his hometown for the first time since the Panama Papers scandal verdict on July 28.

The injured, including women and children, were rushed to the nearby hospitals for treatment.

Lahore, a city of around six million, is Pakistan's cultural hub and the capital of its most powerful province, Punjab.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Yasmin Rashid, who is also a candidate to contest election from NA-120 after the seat fell vacant due to former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's disqualification, has demanded implementation of National Action Plan (NAP) in Punjab to curb attacks.

The health condition of a number of those wounded in the explosion has been reported as critical.

The incident took place late on Monday evening after a truck vehicle packed with explosives went off.

"At least 34 people were injured, majority are passersby", he added. The explosion has led to the development of a huge crater in the blast site.

Several vehicles in the area were also damaged due to the intensity of the explosion. Meanwhile police have cordoned off the entire area.

The police official said that explosives were hidden in the truck which accidentally triggered around 9pm.

DIG Haider Ashraf confirmed the bomb blast and said that an investigation has been launched.

In February, a suicide bomber killed 14 people, including senior police officers, near the Punjab Assembly here.
