Milwaukee's Sheriff David Clarke has resigned

Reaction to the resignation of David Clarke as sheriff of Milwaukee County is coming in swift. "I was not given any advance notice of this, as you can imagine my phone has been ringing off the hook".

Clarke also aggressively pushed his department to partner with the Department of Homeland Security to crack down on and round up undocumented immigrants.

Milwaukee County Clerk George Christenson said the letter doesn't give the reason for Clarke's resignation.

He was a vocal supporter of then-candidate Donald Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, even speaking at the Republican National Convention.

As sheriff, Clarke adopted a very politically incorrect approach to fighting crime.

On June 19, according to his spokesman, Clarke "formally notified Secretary of Homeland Security John F. Kelly that he had rescinded his acceptance of the agency's offer to join DHS as an assistant secretary".

Conservative groups have called on Clarke to challenge Democratic U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin in 2018, but he has rejected that suggestion. Clarke said in response that he'd withdrawn his name from consideration.

Clarke's spokeswoman did not immediately respond to telephone messages and emails seeking comment.

He was later accused of plagiarism in his master's thesis at the Naval Postgraduate School.

He rose to national prominence as a fierce critic of the Black Lives Matter movement with his charged conservative rhetoric. But as Nick Wing explained at HuffPost, the number of deaths is highly unusual: "Based on an analysis of The Huffington Post's jail death database, other jails that have four deaths in a year are several times the size of Clarke's downtown jail site, which has a capacity of 960".
