Rajiv Pratap Rudy resigns as Union Minister

So far, three union ministers, all from the BJP, have stepped down ahead of a cabinet reshuffle that is expected to take place tomorrow before Prime Minister Narendra Modi leaves for China on Sunday. The other ministers who resigned from their positions are Uma Bharti, Radhamohan Singh, Sanjeev Balyan and Giriraj Singh.

Rudy, a BJP MP from Saran in Bihar, held Independent Charge of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

A reshuffle will help the Narendra Modi government weed out the dead wood from the government and infuse new blood in the cabinet.

There are several vacancies in the Cabinet, and it is likely that Finance Minister Arun Jaitley might shed his additional charge of Defence portfolio.

Birendra Singh and Sudarshan Bhagat are also on the list of those asked to resign.

Sources said the Cabinet expansion and reshuffle is likely to happen on September 2 in the evening.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu was among the probables to be removed from the Cabinet, considering the resignation offered by him following the back-toback train derailment incidents in UP's Muzaffarnagar and Auriya districts. Civil aviation minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju and agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh are also to be shifted.

Union minister Mahendra Nath Pandey resigned and has been appointed as Uttar Pradesh BJP president.

In his first comments after being asked to resign as minister, Rajiv Pratap Rudy told NDTV that "It's not my decision, it's the decision of the party, and I will follow (it)". Maurya is a part of UP chief minister Yogi Adityanath's Cabinet and one of the state's two deputy chief ministers. Karnataka will go for assembly polls next year.

Mr Shah later met Prime Minister Modi at the latter's official residence 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. Five junior ministers were also dropped. She has been keeping indifferent health for the past few months and reportedly wants to work for the Namami Gange project as well as work for the BJP. As per the sources, JD (U), who is now the new partner of NDA, is all set to join the government, while BJP is also keen to bring AIADMK.
