Orlando Arcia went a ideal 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs, while Travis Shaw went 1 for 2 with a double of his own and two RBIs. Travis Shaw and Orlando Arcia each hit a two-run double, Ryan Braun scored on a balk by Grimm, and Perez had a sacrifice fly. Nelson was removed after five innings with shoulder soreness, but the Cubs mustered just a walk off the Brewers bullpen. Fortunately for the Brewers, they still have plenty to play for between the wild card and the division, despite their laying down in Cincinnati. So far, the teams are 3-3 when playing against each other at Wrigley Field; Milwaukee is looking to finish the season with a winning record at Wrigley Field for the first time since 2013 (6-3) - the Brewers went 9-20 there from 2014-16.
Garza is in the final year of a four-year deal that paid him $50 million. Montgomery lasted only two-plus innings, as he gave up four runs in the Brewers' eight-run third inning. He's walked 18 and struck out 17 for an ERA of 10.13. They managed just four hits on the day.
The 28-year-old injured his shoulder while sliding back to first base in Friday's 2-0 win over the Cubs, and while it's unclear if the issue will require surgery to fix, it will leave him sidelined until 2018 regardless.
The frustrating part is they won series against the Dodgers and Nationals, a pair of first place teams. Nelson's six games with double-digit strikeouts this season (had 11 in his last start last Friday versus Washington) are the most by a Brewer in a season since Gallardo in 2010 (seven).
"My biggest thing was to get the guys back in the dugout, get them swinging the bats", Anderson said. And if Arrieta were to miss his next turn in the rotation beyond next week and the Cubs line up Montgomery to pitch every fifth game, he would start the opening game of what could be a pivotal series against the Brewers at Miller Park on Thursday, Sept. 21.
