The Real 'Spicey' Crashes The Emmys, As Stars Mock Trump

Last week, actress Melissa McCarthy picked up one at the creative arts Emmy Awards for her portrayal of ex-White House press secretary, Sean Spicer. And McCarthy wasn't the only audience member stunned by Spicer's appearance on the Emmys stage.

The stars of Sunday's Emmy Awards had plenty to say about Donald Trump during a night when it seemed as if everyone from host Stephen Colbert to the winners took a shot at the president.

"The Handmaid's Tale" and political comedy "Veep" won the top prizes at the Emmy awards on Sunday, but satirical sketch show "Saturday Night Live" won the most Emmys overall on the back of a season of Donald Trump spoofs.

The cameo surprised even the real McCarthy, who has famously taken off Spicer on several occasions for Saturday Night Live.

"If we're honest with ourselves - and as artists, I think we have to be honest with ourselves - we know that the biggest TV star of the previous year is Donald Trump", Colbert said. He never won. Why didn't you give him an Emmy?

"But he didn't. Because unlike the presidency, Emmys go to the victor of the popular vote", he said, touching another sore point for Trump.

Spicer appeared on the awards show to mock his fiery exchange with reporters following President Trump's inauguration in January. Every night that The Late Show has been on the air has been a night that Colbert has passionately slammed Trump and his staff alike for using their power to spread falsehoods and fear. I thought you people love morally compromised antiheroes.

Spicer also didn't inform Trump or the White House about his appearance and said he hopes Trump wasn't offended by the skit.

The remarks were a reference to Spicer's jaw-dropping assertion at the very start of his tenure that Trump's inauguration was the most attended ever, pressing the president's claims despite photographic evidence to the contrary.

The Emmys is one of my favourite awards ceremonies because some Who-ey celebrity you don't know is always swanning the red carpet and you're like "Why is this person at the Emmys?" "You gotta have the big numbers". Colbert asked. "He's just like Walter, just whiter!" If he had won an Emmy, I bet he would not have run for president.

"Wow", Colbert replied. "That really soothes my fragile ego".

Alec Baldwin won a supporting actor Emmy for his impression of Trump on SNL.
