Ireland rise to 26 in latest Federation Internationale de Football Association rankings

After a busy qualifying program last week, Brazil, Portugal, Argentina, Belgium and Poland are also top-seeded for the December 1 draw in Moscow. Northern Ireland, Ireland, Sweden and Greece will be the unseeded teams in the draw, which takes place tomorrow.

Federation Internationale de Football Association uses its October World Ranking to decide all four seeding pots, despite nine places in the 32-team World Cup line-up still to be decided in November. Russian Federation goes into the top pot, followed by the top seven-ranked teams, and the remaining 24 teams are spread into the three subsequent pots in order.

Chile stayed in ninth despite missing out on World Cup qualification and Peru rose into the top 10 for the first time after qualifying for the intercontinental play-off against New Zealand.

Peru, Switzerland, England, Colombia, Italy, Mexico and Uruguay are the next seven nations either in the World Cup or still alive in contention. Based on these rankings, Switzerland, Italy, Croatia and Denmark will be in Pot 1, while Northern Ireland, Sweden, Republic of Ireland and Greece will be in Pot 2.

Who will be the team for Northern Ireland and the Republic to avoid? Likewise they can not play Sweden or Greece.

Both balls will then be placed into a third pot and will be drawn one after the other. The return leg takes place between November 12 and 14.

The main round of the global qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup has been already concluded and nine remaining vacant spots in the championship will be determined in the play-off round. In event of a draw on aggregate, away goals apply. If the scores are still level at the end of extra time, the tie will go to penalties.
