"Polestar 1 is the first auto to carry the Polestar on the bonnet". Polestar unveiled the 600bhp Polestar 1, its first vehicle, which is set to roll off the production line in mid-2019. The move comes following Volvo's announcement this summer that from 2019, every vehicle in their lineup will have an electric motor. According to The Verge, the Polestar 1 is capable of churning out 600 horsepower through its gasoline-hybrid powertrain, and it is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine.
Polestar started out as a performance brand that tuned Volvo cars. It also features Ohlins continuously controlled electric suspension (CESi). "A lovely GT with incredible technology packed into it - a great start for our new Polestar brand", Thomas Ingenlath, Chief Executive Officer of Polestar, said in the press release announcing the Polestar 1.
It was unveiled this week at an event held in Shanghai, and it is in line with Volvo's vow to only introduce electric cars beginning on 2019. The sporty hybrid GT, a major step toward Volvo Car Group's first all-electric car, shares its basic Scalable Platform Architecture (SPA) with the latest Volvo vehicles.
The Polestar 1 features dual electric motors putting out a combined 215 BHP that power the rear wheels. Now under construction, it is due for completion in mid-2018. Naming might be a problem, as Polestars 2 and 3 are already set to be a small saloon and SUV respectively. A maximum of 500 cars will be built per year and all those will be offered on a subscription basis.
Perhaps the most interesting part of Polestar's launch as a standalone brand is that you'll not be able to outright buy one of their models, at least for now, as the company hasn't announced yet any other official purchasing options apart from a subscription service that lasts two or three years, depending on your choice. The Polestar 3 will follow, giving Polestar a battery electric SUV to sit between the flagship 1 and the 2 in terms of pricing and volume. The costs will include insurance and maintenance.
Polestar 1 order books are open now, for those that want to reserve a Polestar future right away.
