The Larimer County coroner's office identified one of the victims as university student Savannah McNealy, 22, of Fort Collins.
The Fort Collins community is trying to understand what led up to the shooting that killed two people before the gunman took his own life.
It is with a very heavy heart that I write to inform you that Savannah McNealy, a CSU senior, was killed last night in the shooting that occurred on City Park Avenue. CBS4 was asked not to release the surviving victim's identity, until her family was prepared to address the shooting.
Neither Kemp nor the wounded woman was a Colorado State student.
The shooting happened in Fort Collins and the motive is still unknown.
Police responded to the shooting at an apartment complex at around 2 a.m., Fox31 reported.
"She was well-loved and respected by those who knew her", said CSU president Tony Frank in a statement, calling her an "exceptional, bright, energetic, confident, and creative young woman". He then shot himself in the head. Two rifles and a handgun were found at the apartment complex and are registered to him.
McNealy's friend Hannah Foster told the newspaper the Coloradoan that the woman had been in a romantic relationship with Zamora at least since May.
Air Force officials identified Zamora as a staff sergeant assigned to the Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Wyoming. When he got out of the Air Force, he continued to serve as a civilian. The two friends had gone to Fort Collins together on Wednesday, he said.
Yellow police tape cordoned off a parking area outside a drab gray apartment building in the City Park neighborhood, a residential area that abuts the university's 590-acre campus.
The killings of McNealy and Kemp bring Fort Collins' homicide total this year to five, not including three fatal shootings by law enforcement officers.
