Patriots Claim TE Martellus Bennett Off Waivers

The New England Patriots have claimed tight end Martellus Bennett off waivers, a day after he was cut by the Green Bay Packers.

Newly acquired New England Patriots tight end Martellus Bennett has been playing with a torn rotator cuff, according to multiple reports Friday. As Rapoport noted, there is little risk in the Patriots claiming him, as if his shoulder is an issue this year, they could also put him on the Injured Reserve.

Bennett said the Packers cleared his shoulder during a March exam when he joined them as a free agent following a one-year stint with the Patriots.

Bennett was back at practice and the Patriots didn't even rule him out for Sunday's game in Denver.

During the Packers' bye week he indicated on an Instagram post that he would likely retire after this season.

They tried to fuck over me.

Questions persisted all week in the Packers locker room about whether Bennett quit on the team after quarterback Aaron Rodgers went down with a shoulder injury.

There was a rift between Bennett and the Packers growing this year, with Bennett posting on Instagram during the team's bye week he was strongly considering retiring. It got worse during the season, specifically against the cowboys so I asked to have it checked and we checked it.

"I mean, really, to tie all that together, you're asking me to get inside somebody else's feelings, conversation, more on a personal level", McCarthy said (via ESPN's Rob Demovsky).

Rodgers caught 58 passes in 2015 before ceding time last season to then-starter Jared Cook.
