Second-string England side impress in goalless draw against Germany

England played out a 0-0 draw with world champions Germany on Friday night.

The Three Lions fielded an inexperienced eleven with three players making their maiden worldwide appearances, Tammy Abraham joining Loftus-Cheek and Pickford, and totalling just 101 caps with only five players on 10 or more.

Unless there's a catastrophic injury crisis at the end of the season, this team won't be the one Southgate selects in the World Cup next summer in Russian Federation.

The 21-year-old's calm display, especially when he dropped deep into midfield, won him praise from a variety of experts.

The Crystal Palace player, on loan from Chelsea, was a mixture of the elegant and the efficient for England, passing and moving so intelligently.

Centre-back Jones will not be involved, however, after the centre-back was forced off midway through the first half against Germany and he has returned to Manchester United for treatment, leading Southgate to bolster his squad with three England Under-21 players. "I've settled in really well and they gave me a platform to go out and play".

"He's quite a quiet lad, so I'm hoping he gets a lift in confidence from how we see him, the level we think he's capable of". He's got so many good attributes, top attributes, and that's why we put him into the team.

"We used the ball really well, and we created a couple of really good chances", added Southgate.

"He's certainly made really important saves tonight".

The 20-year-old has previously played for the Under-16s through to the Under-21s.

England have called up Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn to replace broken finger victim Jack Butland to their squad for the friendly with Brazil at Wembley on Tuesday.

He said: "Loftus-Cheek is a player I've watched do that since U16 level, and despite his size and appearance and the way he plays, he's not hugely confident at times".
