Tennessee recruit: Butch Jones 'told me to find a place to go'

The Vols (4-6, 0-6 SEC) are in danger of missing a bowl game for the first time since 2013, Jones' first season. The famed rock at UT's Knoxville campus has already been painted with a sign referencing Butch Jones' exit from the Volunteers' football program.

Sports Illustrated first reported Jones was out.

It was widely assumed that Jones would be the next SEC head coach to go after Florida fired Jim McElwain, and many expected Tennessee to make the move sooner.

This comes one day after the Vols were blown out 50-17 at Missouri and the Vols' fifth loss in their last six games. "For that reason, I have asked Coach Jones to step down as head football coach".

LSU will take on an interim coach on Saturday night. How clear could it be that Tennessee was completely outmatched and Jones needed to be dismissed? He was making $4.11 million per year at Tennessee.

Two weeks ago, the Volunteers lost at Kentucky 29-26, only its second loss to the Wildcats in the past 33 years. The Vols followed up that Georgia defeat by losing four of their next five games.

Jones was 34-27 at Tennessee, including back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2015 and 2016.

Under Jones, the Vols didn't achieve the success they experienced in the 1990s.

Currie said defensive line coach Brady Hoke will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Hoke was serving as the defensive line coach at Tennessee and was the head coach at MI before Jim Harbaugh.

Tennessee's Interm Head Coach Is? Hoke has a career coaching record of 78-70 between three jobs with Ball State, San Diego State and MI.
