Kelly succeeds Jim Mora, who was sacked last week after a 28-23 loss to USC.
Chip Kelly is back in college football.
Chip Kelly appears headed back to the school.
Kelly, 53, has not coached since last season when he led the 49ers to a 2-14 record. The program announced that it had tabbed Kelly as a replacement for Jim Mora on Saturday morning after rumors were swirling regarding him taking the job. And now comes word from Pete Thamel who reports Kelly has picked UCLA and is finalizing the deal to be the Bruins new coach with an agreement expected by the end of the weekend.
"It is an absolute honor to join the Bruin family, and I am grateful to Chancellor (Gene) Block and to Dan Guerrero for this incredible opportunity" Kelly said. He previously had been named AP Coach of the Year at OR in 2010-11, when they lost the BCS Championship game to Auburn, compiling a 46-7 record with the Ducks from 2009-12 before jumping to the NFL. Offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch was named interim head coach for the remainder of the season. His offenses ranked in the top 10 nationally in points per game each year he was in Eugene. "I look forward to his presence in Westwood".
The hire itself is a landmark accomplishment for a program that has not won a conference title since 1998 and not won the Rose Bowl since the 1985 season.
