Giants acquire Evan Longoria from Rays

The three time All-Star, Longoria finished 2017 with a 3.6 WAR, 20 home runs, 86 runs batted in.

Also, he's getting off turf, noting, "I'm excited to be playing on grass".

Drafted third overall in the 2006 Major League Baseball draft, Longoria has spent his entire 10-year career with the Rays, helping them reach the World Series in 2008, his rookie season. He previously played for the Nationals and the Twins. "Evan has been one of the best third basemen in the game over the last decade, and we are thrilled to add him to the organization". "It's going to be one of the best infield defenses in the game".

Arroyo, a first-round draft pick out of high school in 2013, was one of the Giants' top prospects but didn't play in the majors after June 2 because of a broken left hand.

"That's the cost of doing business", Sabean said of sending Arroyo in the deal.

Per a source, outfielder Denard Span is heading back to Tampa, while Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports that the Rays will also get infielder Christian Arroyo, left-hander Matt Krook and right-hander Stephen Woods. The left-handed Moore was dealt last week to Texas. The Downey, California native will be 36 years old when his contract expires in 2022, and San Francisco entered the offseason looking to become younger and more athletic. He will be Tampa's no. 4 prospect and could end up being Longoria's replacement.

The Giants will be receiving cash, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Unlike other teams that might have gone in the opposite direction, the Giants' response to last season's bottoming-out has been to think big for 2018. The Giants had been linked throughout the winter to free agent third baseman Mike Moustakas, but signing him would have cost the Giants a 2018 draft pick and global bonus-pool money - added costs they weren't willing to take on. First baseman Carlos Santana, who took a three-year $60 million deal from the Philadelphia Phillies, is the only top-tier free agent hitter to have signed so far this winter.

"This is a long-awaited day in our offseason dealings". We check off a huge box with this acquisition. Longoria's arrival certainly accomplishes that goal, but it should be just the start of the Giants' offseason if, as they say, they truly plan to contend again next season.
