Pit bull attack leaves woman dead, husband injured, police say

The owner of the two pit bulls that attacked a woman and her husband in Bell County, Ky. has been charged with harboring a vicious animal.

Lorraine Saylor and her husband Johnny were attacked by two dogs.

The Bell County Sheriff's Department has identified the woman as Lorraine Brock Saylor, 66. Her husband shot both of them, killing one and injuring the other.

He shot both animals, killing one and injuring the other, to fight them off but it was too late to save his wife.

Police are asking people in the community to be on the lookout for a brown and white pit bull that is injured.

The sheriff's department said a caller had reported his brother and sister-in-law were attacked by two of their neighbour's dogs.

Investigators discovered that the dogs belonged to Johnny Dale Lankford, who was being held in the Bell County Detention Center on charges of second-degree assault, domestic violence, and second-degree unlawful imprisonment from December 22.

The attack happened near Highway 66 in the Wiser Branch area where deputies said they found the couple had been "savagely attacked by two pit bulls".

Lorraine Saylor was pronounced scene and her husband was transported to Pineville Community Hospital with arm and head injuries.

"Under no circumstances are you to engage this unsafe animal", the department said on Facebook.

This is not the only pit bull attack of the year.

"They were just a super nice couple, and I can't even begin to put myself in his shoes. She was just a sweetheart" said Steele.

The victims' will be released after their family is notified, investigators said.

An autopsy on Saylor is scheduled for this week.
