Firefighter catches child dropped from second floor of burning building

The professional firefighters association released helmet camera video showing one of the children being dropped from the building's third floor balcony.

Captain Jackie Peckrul, one of the DeKalb County firefighters who responded to the January 3 blaze at Avondale Forest Apartments in Decatur, WAGA that the situation looked pretty dire when she arrived with her fellow firefighters.

The video shows a person on top of a ladder drop a child down to a firefighter as the flames roar around them. Captain Peckwell and Captain Stewart each caught babies'.

Capt. Eric Jackson with DeKalb County Fire and Rescue told Channel 2 Action News that four adults and eight children were hurt in the fire.

Ragland tossed his baby to Peckrul, herself a mother of triplets, who was halfway up the ladder. "We were catching babies; we were kicking in doors, letting folks know they needed to get out".

A Georgia firefighter is being hailed as a hero this morning after catching a child from a third story balcony.

Jackson told WSB-TV that firefighters had to smash through doors to help some out.

"We don't encounter that pretty often", Crump said.

Investigators said they believe the fire broke out on an outdoor patio.
