Shape of Water lands a leading 13 Oscar nods

(That's what's going on in the chart above.) This year, the front-runner is easy to spot: With a major win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards and more cumulative points than six of the previous 10 winners (at this point in the Oscars race), 1997 best actress victor McDormand is a clear favorite.

Directing: "Dunkirk", Christopher Nolan; "Get Out", Jordan Peele; "Lady Bird", Greta Gerwig; "Phantom Thread", Paul Thomas Anderson; "The Shape of Water", Guillermo del Toro.

Approaching the final category - best picture - Haddish asked Serkis if he wanted to announce it.

The cascading fallout of sexual harassment scandals throughout Hollywood put particular focus on the best director category, which for many is a symbol of gender inequality in the film industry.

The film hit Mexican cinemas two weekends ago, rising to the top of the domestic box office and earning 61.2 million pesos (just under USA $3.5 million) on its opening weekend.

The 90th annual Academy Awards will be hosted live by Jimmy Kimmel at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday, March 4 starting at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT on ABC. Gerwig's Best Director nomination is just the fifth for a woman in that category.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri leads the rest of the categories nominations. Netflix's "Mudbound" scored four nods and Amazon's "The Big Sick" grabbed a nomination for Holly Hunter, best supporting actress, and Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon's original screenplay about their real-life romance.

"I am absolutely thrilled to have received this nomination by the Academy".

"Mudbound" director of photography Rachel Morrison became the first woman ever to be nominated for cinematography - an honor she said left her in shock.

Franco's The Disaster Artist was praised by critics, but that was before the actor was accused of "sexually exploitative behaviour" by five women who spoke to the Los Angeles Times.

Octavia Spencer ("The Shape of Water") and Mary J. Blige ("Mudbound") are both up for Best Supporting Actress.

Peele added, "As the last couple of years unfolded and the country got woke to a certain extent, the movie became less about identifying the fact that racism exists and much more about giving us a hero".

While Franco won't be in the running to win Best Actor, it'll be a tight race anyway with Timothee Chalamet, Daniel Day-Lewis and Daniel Kaluuya, Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington all nominated. He can now tack on another descriptor: Oscar nominee for best picture. "The Shape of Water" and "Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri" - incidentally, both from Fox Searchlight - are the only movies that look like previous winners so far. He won a best supporting actor award for his work on the 2011 film "Beginners". "I feel an extra piece of pride that we're talking about a film of this genre - my favorite genre, horror/thriller which is not usually regarded in this way".

SURPRISE: "Abacus: Small Enough to Jail" for Best Documentary Feature: PBS will get a surprise nomination for their powerful recounting about how a small, family-owned bank in New York's Chinatown became the only bank prosecuted by the feds in the wake of the 2008 recession.
