Galaxy S9 has a major chink in its armour

Equipped with a dual-aperture camera, the phones are designed for advanced photo- and video-taking capabilities in low light as well as at high and low speeds. However, it should be noted that this number has no upper limit (the Galaxy S9's still image rating is 104).

The Galaxy S9 main and secondary cameras are both rated at 12 megapixels.

Along with the bezel-less design, the Galaxy S8 also marked the increase in the size of the display compared to the Galaxy S7's tiny 5.1 inch screen. But there's one addition that's not so obvious: stereo speakers.

Samsung's new flagship phones also come with updates to the company's Bixby artificial intelligence, enabling users to turn their devices' cameras into tools for smart image-based searches and augmented reality-based applications, such as translating foreign text or estimating food calories. However, if you own an S8 and seek a boost in battery life, you may be better served skipping the S9. Moving between applications or scrolling through lists were mostly stutter-free.

The S9 has a dual-aperture rear camera, while the S9 Plus gets two rear camera sensors.

And the code behind cameras is becoming just as important as the lenses and sensors that make up the devices themselves.

Also new is a Super Slow-mo mode similar to the Sony Xperia XZ Premium that captures video at 960fps. Unlike most other new smartphones, pricing varies considerably, by as much as $90, depending upon where they're purchased.

Apple's iPhone X takes third with 97 points, though its camera actually outperforms the Google Pixel 2 for photographs. The processor, too, had only the tiniest of upgrades, while the design changes amounted to little more than shifting the fingerprint scanner half an inch to the left to sit beneath the camera. Something of a cross between Animoji and selfie stickers, Samsung's AR Emoji map out more than 100 facial features using user-generated selfie images to create "a 3D model that reflects and imitates expressions, like winks and nods, for true personalization". All of these offer more than the stock Google apps and while others move to purely stock Google apps, there is still a ton of value in these Samsung applications that offer more for the enterprise.

MWC 2018 might have been a dud for new smartphone launches, but the new camera wars are only just getting started.

With the new location of the fingerprint sensor as well as the combination of using Face unlock with the Iris scanner, unlocking the Galaxy S9+ is a whole lot easier and faster than the previous version of the phone.

Samsung says that Intelligence Scan can unlock the phone in challenging light conditions like in darkness or under harsh sunlight.
