Syed Ali Shah Geelani Resigns as Chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat

Srinagar [Jammu and Kashmir], Mar 19 (ANI): Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Monday has resigned as the chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

Syed Alishah Geelani on Monday stepped down from the post of chairman of Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) and nominated his trusted Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai as interim chairman of the separatist outfit.

Geelani though will continue as the head of the Hurriyat Conference.

Geelani and Sehrai formed the Hurriyat in 2007 after parting ways with Jamaat-e-Islami.

In a statement issued for press, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat spokesman said that Syed Ali Geelani while addressing the members of Shoora, said that you are aware of the prevailing situation of the valley and hard times all pro-freedom camp is facing especially Tehreekl-e-Hurriyat. He handed over the responsibilities to his close aide, Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai who was earlier the general secretary of the organisation.

Referring to his perpetual house-arrest, Geelani said that he was not able to contribute to the party's activities. He extended his fullest cooperation and honest wishes to the would-be leadership of the organization.

In November 2015, Geelani was elected as lifetime chairman of the Tehreek-e-Hurriyat.

As per reports, Sehraie, a few months ago, had written to Geelani expressing his displeasure about some developments within the faction. The separatist leader has also served as the president of All Parties Hurriyat Conference, an umbrella organisation fo separatist parties in Jammu and Kashmir.

Geelani's two sons Nayeem and Naseem Khan were recently called by NIA regarding the Kashmir terror funding.
