The Yankees were due to play their first game of the season at home after splitting a four-game series against the Blue Jays in Toronto.
Pillar is the first big league to steal three bases in an inning since San Diego's Wil Myers did it last August 16.
Aaron Judge singled with two outs in the ninth off Seung Hwan Oh, pitching because Blue Jays closer Roberto Osuna was unavailable, but the righthander retired Giancarlo Stanton on a fly to center to end it.
With the count full, Smoak fouled off a couple of curveballs before launching a 92-mph fastball to center for his seventh hit of the series. Toronto's second straight win salvaged a split of the four-game season-opening series at Rogers Centre.
After Marcus Stroman allowed four runs and three hits in five innings, four relievers combined on four shutout innings.
"There was a guy who did it during a spring training game and me and (Curtis) Granderson were talking about how it's not done enough", Pillar said.
Austin tied the game again in the seventh with his second homer, a solo shot to left.
Brandon Drury hit a two-run homer in New York's four-run third inning.
Yankees: X-rays on McKinney's shoulder were negative. In 2015, he went deep off Ivan Nova to become the first Blue Jays player to hit a grand slam in the Bronx - Toronto joined the majors in 1977.
"It caught me off guard", John Gibbons said. Boone said he isn't certain OF Jacoby Ellsbury (strained right oblique) will be ready to come off the disabled list when he is eligible Thursday. Colon will be the second-oldest Texas player behind Nolan Ryan, who was 46 when he made his final start in 1993. 2B Devon Travis and C Russell Martin got the day off. Gibbons said Travis, who missed more than 100 games previous year because of a right knee injury, will get at least one day off every three days for the time being.
The Yankees were set to take the field today at 1:05 p.m. Lynn was 11-8 with a 3.43 ERA in 33 starts last season for St. Louis.
