Manmohan Singh was criticising Modi for staying silent on Kathua case, where an 8-year-old girl was brutally raped and murdered, and Unnao case, where a teenager was raped by a BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar.
Earlier, after the inauguration of the off-campus accommodation for the Government Ayurvedic Medical College Jammu, in the premises of Government Ayurvedic hospital here, Dr Singh in his address congratulated the people of Jammu for getting the gift of Ayurvedic College. The PM's decision was based on the fact that the party must not be seen as "defending rape accused", nor of "communalising an issue and crime as heinous as rape". The team would also visit the Unnao Jail where the rape victim's father was lodged and allegedly beaten by policemen leading to his death. "Dr.Manmohan Singh unlike your observation, when PM Modi says something it's heard & action is taken. Please Dr.Manmohan Singh don't compare your days with that of Modi Ji's". "A right-hand man of Ghulam Nabi Azad was leading an agitation in Jammu and at the same time they were part of the candlelight march", Nirmal Singh said alluding to Jammu High Court Bar Association President B.S Salathia.
Along with Atul, five other accused in the case were sent to police custody too.
In both cases, it is Prime Minister Narendra Modi's BJP which is facing the brunt of the outrage.
New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV) today said it will deposit Rs 10 lakh as per the order of Delhi High Court for revealing the identity of eight-year-old Kathua rape victim. Police inaction in these cases at different points have raised questions. What is wrong with the society? "Those who still pelt stones in the name of the poor girl of Kathua are only hurting the image and interests of the state", government spokesperson and Public Works minister Naeem Akhtar said.
In a memorandum submitted to the Indian Ambassador, the Indian American Muslim Council urged that the Indian Government should do much more in protecting innocent children and minority girls from the fangs of caste based or communal politics. Only one out of four rape cases lead to conviction.
