Earlier this week Trump used a press conference alongside Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari to try and get more support for the joint-bid ahead of the vote to host the 2026 World Cup which will take place on June 13 in Russian Federation.
US President Donald Trump's public demand for US World Cup bid could actually work against US interest. "We will be watching very closely, and any help they can give us in that bid we would appreciate".
But Russian soccer has also made headlines for a string of racist incidents, including at Russia´s friendly against France in March while the country has pledged to combat discriminatory behaviour at sporting events.
It could lead to criticism that Fifa is over-complicating global football and devaluing its flagship World Cup.
FIFA responded to the Tweet nearly immediately and released the following statement seeming to remind Trump about the rules regarding political involvement in soccer associations.
"We understand our responsibility, we understand that much still needs to be done. all the events are still ahead", Putin told Infantino in a separate meeting on Thursday, adding Russian Federation will do "all in its power" to ensure that the tournament meets the highest standards. It's been 16 years since more than one country hosted the tournament.
Trump appeared to tie the issue to trade, saying just ahead of his mention of the World Cup that the United States hopes "to be the economic partner of choice for nations across the continent and all around the world". The government of Dominica later announced its support for Morocco.
"You are working to make this World Cup the best World Cup ever", Infantino told Putin during a nationally televised meeting. South Africa, which competed with Morocco for the 2010 edition, also announced its support a few weeks ago.
