Microsoft shows Cortana and Alexa working together in Build demo

On Monday, the two companies showed the fruits of a collaboration announced last August to let Amazon's Alexa and Microsoft's Cortana talk to each other.

At its Build developer conference, Microsoft further detailed how Microsoft's Cortana and Amazon's Alexa will work together.

After asking Amazon's AI assistant Alexa to add items to her shopping list, Megan Saunders, Microsoft's general manager of Cortana, shifted into work mode. He asked Cortana where the restaurant they were meeting is, then asked Cortana to "open Alexa", which he asked to summon an Uber X to get to the restaurant. Cortana-Alexa integration would allow Amazon Alexa users to access Cortana and Cortana users to access Alexa. In addition to LOVE SPORT's core listener base in the United Kingdom, the shows will also be available to Alexa and Google Assistant users in Australia, Canada, India and the U.S.

Aside from the Pixel 2, other devices reported to have support for the Alexa feature include the Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus, Galaxy S9, Sony Xperia Z5C, One Plus 5, Moto G5 Plus, and more. Echo begins working as soon as it hears you say the wake word, "Alexa".

Microsoft Remote Assist will help users to communicate remotely through hands-free video calling, mixed-reality annotations, and image sharing, while users will also be able to design mixed-reality spaces such as room layouts, holograms that can be shared in real-time. Alexa said "I like Cortana". "I like Cortana. We both have experience with light rings, although hers is more of a #Halo", Microsoft joked at the show.

Saunders said the integrations are only available in limited beta testing for now, but there is a new website where people can sign up for updates.

Alexa, along with Google Assistant, has gained more traction when compared to Cortana.
