About 80 women have come forward with a range of allegations against Weinstein, including rape, harassment and inappropriate comments. "This defendant used his position, money and power to lure young women into situations where he was able to violate them sexually", the prosecutor, Assistant District Atty. Weinstein raised his eyebrows as he heard it.
Weinstein has consistently denied any allegations of nonconsensual sex.
In his NY offices, Weinstein "put my hand on his crotch", then chased her to the elevator and kissed her in front of his staff, she claimed.
It was women sharing their experiences with Weinstein that made way for more victims to come forward with allegations against powerful men in the entertainment industry and beyond, revealing systems that seemed to, for years, insulate those men from any repercussions and silence their victims.
"Cy Vance, the DA in NY, is very precise about when, or he will not indict", Klieman said of the district attorney, who has faced criticism for not pursuing earlier allegations against Weinstein.
The criminal sex act charge stems from a 2004 encounter between Weinstein and Lucia Evans, a then-aspiring actress who has said the Hollywood mogul forced her to perform oral sex on him during a daytime meeting in his office in 2004.
Actress Ashley Judd is suing the Hollywood producer, claiming he damaged her career after she rejected his sexual advances.
The official says the rape charge relates to a woman who has not spoken publicly or been identified.
Someone inside asked me how Mr. Weinstein feels this morning, and my response was; 'As well as can be expected when you're accused of a crime that you vehemently deny having committed'. "At a certain point, you have to think about the greater good of humanity, of womankind". Film actress Rose McGowan said Weinstein raped her in 1997 in Utah, "Sopranos" actress Annabella Sciorra said he raped her in her NY apartment in 1992 and Norwegian actress Natassia Malthe said he attacked her in a London hotel room in 2008. "I said, over and over, 'I don't want to do this, stop, don't, '" she told the magazine. "I want to forgive the world for hurting people and he's a part of that... maybe I'll get there someday".
"Today's charges reflect significant progress in this active, ongoing investigation", Cyrus R. Vance Jr., the Manhattan district attorney, said in a statement after the arraignment.
He has until Wednesday to decide whether to testify before a grand jury.
Deponent further states that he is informed by a second person known to the District Attorney's Office that on March 18, 2013, in the morning hours at 569 Lexington Avenue, in the County and State of NY, defendant kept informant physically against her will in a room and engaged in sexual intercourse with informant by forcible compulsion, to wit, defendant penetrated informant's vagina with his penis and, at the time of the incident informant had clearly expressed her lack of consent to the act. That investigation is in its preliminary stages.
Until the scandal, Weinstein was among the most influential forces in American film. "We're about seven months into this investigation". "I hope in this case it works".
Her fashion label, Marchesa, had been shunned on the red carpet, until Scarlett Johansson wore an off-the-shoulder gown from Chapman's company at the Met Gala in New York City earlier this month.
New York City police have also been investigating allegations by "Boardwalk Empire" actress Paz de la Huerta, who told police last fall that Weinstein raped her twice in 2010.
"It has given. any victim the power to stand up and say 'No, '" she said. The officials spoke Thursday to the AP on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss the investigation. Britain has no statute of limits on rape cases; some of the allegations under investigation there date to the 1980s.
Harvey Weinstein's day of reckoning has come.
