At its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Jose on Monday, Apple will reveal its software strategy for next year and hint at future hardware ambitions.
First, Apple could manage the security of these devices through its HomeKit hubs, which are now the Apple TV, iPad and HomePod. This will take the form of "Digital Health", a collection of settings and usage monitoring tools that will debut in iOS 12 to help iDevice users monitor specific app usage. We hope the company has done something substantial to improve the assistant that will make more efficient and useful. Former Facebook president Sean Parker stated Facebook's design exploited weakness in the human psyche to addict users, and said he anxious about what it was doing to kids' brains. That brings Apple more on par with other smart assistants from Google and Amazon, which already work with third-party speakers.
Now the industry giants are putting some of these principles into practice.
Instead Apple's focus will remain on software, with digital health and augmented reality taking centre stage. A new Mac is also a possibility, though not considered likely. Save for a small update a year ago to bump the storage options to 32GB on the base model and 128GB on the higher capacity version, Apple has done very little to update its cheapest iPhone. Don't get too excited for the long-rumoured Apple AR glasses just yet, because the news will apparently involve the ability to drop virtual objects that stay in place and the ability to let users play AR games against each other.
So what's in store for WWDC 2018?
Plenty of rumors in recent weeks have pointed to Apple working on an updated iPhone SE for this year. But he predicted no radical changes like Face ID facial recognition, a drastic redesign or wireless charging. And if you happen to own an Apple TV (second-generation or later), the keynote will be available via Apple TV through the Events app.
HomePod Apple is not coming slow!
Of course, Apple has kept its software plans silent.
Apple HomePod is falling behind Amazon Echo and Google Home on the market. The company may launch a wireless charging pad called the AirPower that it announced past year. Apple recently poached top Google AI executive John Giannandrea, after criticism about slow feature development compared to the competition.
