However, a spokeswoman for Melania Trump says the USA first lady won't attend the G7 leaders' summit in Charlevoix, Que., which starts Friday.
Lori Donahue of Gillette, Wyo., said she was touched by Melania Trump's presence: "It meant a lot that this was her first since her surgery". "Our office has received thousands of calls and emails wishing Mrs. Trump well, and we thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out", her spokesperson said. But first ladies are not elected and technically are still private citizens, and each one gets to tailor the job to suit her. Her security guards didn't feel it was safe for her to go out.
We'll have to wait until tonight to hear if she really shows up.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders listens to a question during the daily press briefing at the White House, Monday, June 4, 2018, in Washington. She has been meeting with staff and working on upcoming projects, according to spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham.
However, Grisham confirmed to CNN that Melania would attend the reception for Gold Star families, honoring their family members who died in battle. Twitter was abuzz with theories from political observers, both on the left and the right, with a public anxious to see their first lady.
CNN and several other mainstream media outlets had been painting the first lady as "missing in action", even though several observers pointed out that the first lady was spotted in the West Wing as recently as May 29.
"I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am & what I'm doing", she tweeted.
Her first clue that she would be a different first lady came when she chose to continue living at Trump Tower after her husband took office in January 2017, citing a desire to maintain stability for her son's schooling. There were no official or reliable leaked reports about her status following her surgery for what was described as a benign kidney condition.
"I'm amazed Mrs Trump has been able to do it", she told AFP.
