Twitter reacts to news of Anthony Bourdain’s death

At one point in his lifelong struggle with depression, the Bay Area entertainer said he considered suicide.

"It used to be that we didn't even talk about mental health, and certainly not suicide". "The most important thing we can do is realize that depression is not a sign of weakness, it is not a character flaw, it is a disease". In 2016, Kentucky reported 756 suicides, West Virginia reported 362 and OH led the area with 1,707.

That's also a resource for anyone anxious about a loved one. "We have to change culture around mental health, giving help and support", said Allen.

As shown in the map below from the CDC, Nevada is the only state that did not experience an increase in the rate of suicide-though it's still high at an average of 22 per 1,000 during years in the study period.

The CDC said suicides were rarely caused by any single issue. Suicide was the 10th leading cause of death in 2015, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (Lieberman says, however, that this may be because many mental illnesses go undiagnosed or untreated.) Other factors, such as traumatic events, life stressors and substance use, may play a role as well, which underscores the necessity of being there for your loved ones during tough times.

Moschino designer Jeremy Scott said that he briefly met Spade and they shared a laugh about having the same hometown. "You don't know what is happening behind closed doors or what they are really going through".

The CDC recommended a broad approach to suicide prevention, including boosting economic support by states, supporting family and friends after a suicide, and identifying and supporting people at risk for suicide.

Another way to help is by supporting the nonprofits that provide suicide counseling, prevention and education.

"When I talk about my husband, I talk about what an awesome guy he was", she said.

And you'll never know whether someone needs care if you don't ask, Dvoskin says.

"If we can't lend a hand to somebody who's having a struggle then we're missing our objective on this earth", Tom said.

The state was chosen as a "guinea pig" by national partners researching suicide for Colorado National Collaborative, a local and federal-level program that focuses on community-based work to prevent suicide.

If you or anyone you know may be at risk of suicide, call the National Suicide Hotline at 1-800-273-8255 or message the Crisis Text Line "GOT5" to 741-741.
